Though Naomi saw regret in her motherâs eyes, her voice was firm as she said, âIâm sorry, Mr. Carlisle, but I donât believe that would be a good idea. I bump into things in unfamiliar places. I wouldnât want to embarrass you.â
âI assure you, you wouldnât embarrass anyone. My mother is genuine in her wish to spend time with you.â
Naomi bit back a smile at the evidence of Gideonâs determination. If she were a betting woman, she would wager that Ma would capitulate.
Ma was not smiling as she plucked at her skirt. âIt shames me to admit this, but I have nothing appropriate to wear to the Cheyenne Club.â
Gideon had explained that the plans for the Fourth of July celebration included attending the parade and then dining at the private club where he and many of Cheyenneâs wealthiest businessmen were members.
âMadame Charlotte can remedy that,â he said smoothly.
Ma shook her head. âYou know our situation.â Though she didnât say âfinancial situation,â the implication was clear.
Gideon would not be dissuaded. âI shall, of course, pay for your clothing as I did for Naomiâs.â
âThat would not be proper.â Ma had questioned the propriety of Gideonâs buying Naomiâs fancy clothing but had ultimately agreed that as long as no one other than Gideon and Madame Charlotte knew, it would not compromise Naomiâs reputation.
âSurely a man is permitted to give his future mother-in-law a gift.â
âBut sheâs not your future mother-in-law.â Though sheâd been silent during the exchange, believing it was between Gideon and her mother, Naomi couldnât help interjecting her protest.
His eyes were serious as he said, âIn the eyes of the world, she is.â Turning to Ma, he continued his argument. âIf you agree, youâd be making my mother very happy and giving Madame Charlotte additional income. Are you willing to deprive them?â
Though Ma hesitated, Naomi knew her mother was on the verge of agreeing. âAll right, Mr. Carlisle.â
âGideon,â he said firmly. âI insist you call me Gideon.â
âAll right, Gideon. I accept.â
After sheâd escorted Gideon to the door, Naomi turned to her mother. âDo you know what just happened?â Without giving Ma a chance to reply, she said, âGideon made your wish come true. Now you have a reason to visit Ãlan.â
